Completely Blown Away

I can't even put into words how blown away I was by all the positive comments I got on yesterday's post.  Seriously.  You are all phenomenal.  I wish I could hug you all and hang out with you in real life.  Your words were so touching to me, and I definitely needed to hear them.  Today I am feeling much better.  I have a fun weekend ahead for me, and that's keeping me positive!

Again--a huge thank you.  Honestly, I appreciate you all so much more than you could ever know.

Okay, onto my awesome weekend ahead:

First, I am going home to Idaho to chill with my super cool Papa.  Me and Pops are super close.  When my parents got divorced when I was 16, it was just me and him living together and dealing with the fallout of our family implosion.  Those were tough times and we survived them together.  I couldn't be more grateful for the awesome father I have:

Anyway, I'm going up to Idaho today by myself and then Hubster is meeting me up there on Friday with his whole family!  Tomorrow Pops and I are going to go to Yellowstone to do some awesome hiking (and hopefully not get eaten by grizzly bears!).  We'll be hiking in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone by Yellowstone Falls.

If we survive the bears, the next day will be a 10-mile run for me and perhaps some Zumba with my awesome sister.  In addition to that, I get to play with my super cute nieces and nephews!  CAN'T WAIT!  Love my little kiddies:

Then Saturday I will be going up to Island Park with Hubster's family (+ Pops) and we will go canoeing and then head up to West Yellowstone to see some of Lower Geyser Basin.  I haven't been to the Geysers in Yellowstone in YEARS.  Should be a great weekend!

And if that wasn't enough, Sunday I will be going over to my other sister's house and we are going to have the whole family (both mine and Hubster's) over for a big rib cookout.  My brother-in-law recently took grand prize in a rib cookout (against professional chefs--his first time entering!) and we are pretty excited to try some of his tasty eats.  I'll also get to see this cute little munchkin:

So that's my weekend.  If I don't post for a while, you know why.  Not only am I living life to the fullest with my family, I'm also going into no-man's land for internet service.  My dad has dial-up.  And not the upgraded somewhat "fast" dial-up.  It's the painfully slow, takes 2 hours to watch a youtube clip kind of slow.  That's the trade-off for views like these:

Pity Party for One, Please...

Last night was a rough night, the kind of night where you find yourself silently crying yourself to sleep.

It wasn't set off by anything in particular.  As I settled into bed, I just found myself thinking of the things that I am failing miserably at lately and it became too much for me to handle and I just started bawling.  There's a song in my church that talks about counting your blessings and naming them one by one, but last night I found myself counting my flaws instead.  It was a long list.  And I was mad because I feel like I've been putting so much effort into improving myself but I have hardly anything to show for it.  I'm not talking about weight loss (although that was one of the items on my list).  I'm talking about all sorts of other aspects of my life that affect me and my husband.

I just wish I were a better person.  

I'm going to take last night and reevaluate my priorities and get back on track.  Pity parties are lame and I don't want anymore of them in my honor.  I deserve to be more than I currently am, and my husband deserves more from me.  I'm not sure why I chose to share this today, but I guess I just wanted to let you know that I'm human and that I struggle.  Does anyone else ever get bogged down by the weight of their responsibilities?  I can't even imagine how much harder this would be for me if I had kids!  The thought is nearly overwhelming!

Any advice on how to juggle a 50 hour a week job, training for a marathon, and home responsibilities? This girl could use some help!

My brain cannot compute

My little legs logged 23.6 miles on Saturday.

Let's repeat that...

23.6 MILES.

I ran 20 of those and walked 3.6.  A year ago I could barely run 3 miles and now I'm capable of running 20 miles?


My brain can't even computer the amount of time and effort 20 miles takes. Seriously.  It's like my brain just shuts off and doesn't even realize that it is running.  Time goes by and the miles tick on.  I get asked frequently how I even prepare myself mentally for a run like that, and the answer is that you can't.  I just take the run section by section.  This is pretty much how it goes for me:

"I'm going for a 5 mile run today!"

...5 miles later...

"I'm going to go for a short 5 mile run back to my house!"

...5 miles later and after filling up with more water...

"A 5 mile run sure sounds like a good idea!"

...5 miles later...

 "A short 5 mile run would be a great right about now!"

And that's how I trick myself.  I don't go for long runs.  I go for multiple short runs right in a row. It's the only way that I can override my brain.  20 miles = absolutely terrifying.  5 miles = manageable.  Now you know my secret!

I should confess that the 20 miles I ran were not done consecutively.  I ran/walked 15 miles before my left knee decided to rebel and I had to walk the mile and a half home (sulking) to go ice my knee and try again an hour later.  An hour later it was MEGA hot outside (95+) so I opted to bust out the old treadmill that I haven't ran on in nearly a year!  It was a bit crazy to be running on that for 7 miles steady when last year at this time I was working my way up to being able to run for 2-3 minutes straight.  Crazy how much progress can be made in one year!

So now I'm officially done with my long runs.  Marathon is in less than 3 weeks.  And I am ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED.

Any advice for a newbie?

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly...

The Ugly--my serious lack of blogging over the past couple of weeks.  Eesh!

I feel like so much has been missed that I need to summarize my life in bullet points!  But alas, I will refrain.  I've been slacking big time on my weekly runs, but not missing the big runs on the weekend.  I've had some lingering calf pain that has made me shy away from the risk of over-training.  I hope it helps.  I will be doing more cross training this week to see if it helps out.  I've also been trying to enjoy the summer by participating in non-workout related events.  I went and saw The Help a few days ago with Running Roommate and really enjoyed it.  It made me laugh out loud at several different parts, and it also had me nearly tearing up quite a few times.  Overall, it was a great flick and did the book justice.

I also saw Adele last night in concert and she was AMAZING.  If you like her music, make sure you do NOT miss her next time she comes into your area!  Well worth the ticket price!  She is gorgeous in real life and has a super cute/fun personality.  I will definitely be seeing her again.

Seriously--she looked fantastic and sounded even better than she looked.  I might have been quite a bit jealous.  Also, she looked quite a bit thinner than photos I've seen of her online.  There were rumors she cancelled some of her tour dates (SLC included) not because of laryngitis, but because the record label told her to lose weight and she was feeling the stress of Hollywood standards and kinda broke down.  I hope that's not true, because she is beautiful no matter what weight she is at.

But back to the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Let's start with the good, shall we?

The Good:

I ran 17 miles a couple of Fridays ago and it was AWESOME.  I didn't die.  I felt strong until about mile 15 or 16 when I had some calf pain, but I ran pretty much the whole entire 17 miles!

I woke up at 4 am in order to be on the pavement by 4:30.  The full moon was out and the Perseid Meteor showers were going on so I was able to watch shooting stars fall over my head for the first 30 minutes or so of my run.  That was pretty phenomenal.  The sun slowly started rising and I was able to watch a beautiful sunrise before finishing the first 9 mile loop.  I had some digestive issues right at that point so I was thankful I had designed my loop to end at my house!  After refilling all my water bottles and a quick bathroom break, I headed out the door to finish the remaining 8 miles.

The last 8 miles weren't terrible either.  The sun was completely above the mountains by this point, and that meant there were more people on the trail with me.  I LOVE seeing people out and about getting some exercise.  They always smile so politely and seem genuinely excited to see me, even though they don't know me at all!  I think it's because we are all part of the secret "wake up way early in the morning to get our fitness on" club.  I like it.  Anyway, the run was going well until about mile 15 when my calf muscle started hurting and I had to slow it down and walk for a bit.  It had cramped up and wouldn't release!  Booo!  But after walking for a while, I finally was able to get to a place where I could run again and finished my 17 miles in about 3 hours and 15 minutes (not including the bathroom break).  All in all, a good run!

However, it left me rather fatigued for the remainder of the week.  I had to get on a flight directly after my run (I showered first!!), and so I had a few hours of just sitting there letting my lactic acid marinate.  Not ideal.  By the time I got to my destination (Lincoln, Nebraska), I was QUITE sore.   I did get some walking done at the Lincoln Super Fair(!!) which helped alleviate some of my pain, but I was still pretty dang sore.  I took it easy for the remainder of the weekend, and the rest of the week. By that I mean I didn't run at all until my 18-miler on Saturday.  I would like to say I regret the missed mileage, but honestly I felt like I really need to get my energy back.

This brings me to...

...The Bad:  Clearly I did not get all my energy back by the time I needed it on Saturday.  I had slept like crap all week long and I woke up on Friday morning with all my lymph nodes in my throat swollen.  I was definitely feeling like I was getting sick.  I woke up early on Saturday to meet Running Roommate in her hometown to go for our 18 mile run.  Within the first mile I knew I was in trouble.  My calf muscle was PISSED.  Super tight and painful.  It felt like it was about an inch too short to be making the movement I needed it to do.  Not good!  We tried several things to try to get the muscle to loosen up (stretching, massaging, etc.) but it didn't seem to want to cooperate.  I was afraid I was going to have to throw the towel in within the first 2 miles!

Luckily for me (not so much for Running Roommate), RR is super patient and was willing to hang out with me while I walked it off.  She and I did a LOT of walking on this run (all my fault!).  I'm not even sure I want to type out all the details of this run because it means I have to relive the pain and frustration.  Let's just say that by mile 6 I was falling apart and walking more than I was running.  I was having stomach cramps and my leg muscles felt like jelly.  This trend continued until we hit mile 13 and RR was wise enough to say "let's just get home and have you take a rest for a few minutes."  So, we took a big break (long enough to watch an episode of Scrubs!) while I laid on the floor and tried to convince my body to get its shiz together and actually run.

I'd like to say that the break was the ticket that saved the run, but the misery continued nearly straight out the door.  It was hot outside (we all know how much I like to run in the heat), and my legs still felt like jello.  I was able to run the first 1.5 miles without issue, but then it was back to the walking for a long time/running for a little bit of time routine.  So awful!!  I have NEVER had a run this bad.  Seriously.  I have no clue what the problem was.  I think it was a combo of a few things: #1 - lack of good sleep; #2 - lack of good dinner night before (I barely ate), #3 - slightly sick, #4 - little bit of heat exhaustion at the end (I had chills and all sorts of weirdness going on).

When I got home I took a bath to help soak my muscles and then crawled into bed to take a 3 hour nap.  I was exhausted!  I was running a fever and everything.  Luckily, the extra sleep paid off and I woke up on Sunday feeling quite a bit better.

Anyway, I am certainly hoping that this weekend's 20 miler goes MUCH better.  I'm not sure how long it took us to finish the 18 miles this weekend, but I think it was a good hour or two longer than I had planned on.  My friend is a total trooper though; she never once left me or let me quit.  She was with me the entire time and was the best cheerleader I could've ever asked for.  Words can't express how much I truly value her and her friendship.  She is AMAZING!

You should all be jealous that I have a friend as awesome as her.  :)

Now to The Ugly:  My lack of blogging is totally depressing me, folks.  Work has been insanely busy and the last thing I want to do when I get home is log onto my computer after having stared at a computer screen for 10 hours.  So apparently that means I don't blog at all.  Super lame!  However, I am feeling a bit less worn down this week and am hopeful that blogging will resume as normal!

Congrats to Ann for completing her first Ragnar Relay!  Such a hard challenge, and she totally killed it.

A quick congrats to all my Utah blogger girls who competed in the Hobble Creek Half this weekend! Julia, Ash, and Rachelle all ran it and kicked butt!  Also, a quick thank you to Rachelle for making me feel a bit better about eating pavement during the Timp Half.  I am glad I'm not the only one who knows what it feels like to fall during a race!  :)  I think she did it just to make me feel less embarrassed about my fall a few weeks ago.   I'm just glad she is okay!  She's a total rock star for running through the pain (and blood)!

However, I think this means a warning should be sent out.  It is apparently the cool thing to fall during races these days (I'd like to think I started the trend...).  Miss Liz from One-Twenty-Five also ate some pavement this weekend during a race.  Runners--beware!  It's dangerous out there!

I'll tell you what I want...

...what I really really want! (Yep--Spice Girls.  Please forgive me!)

Anyway....what I really really want is to be able to post details on my 17 mile run that I completed this Friday (spoiler alert--I didn't die!), as well as talk about a conversation I had with my mom regarding balance and running BUT I absolutely positively do not have the time.

So know this--I am thinking of you all, reading your blogs when possible, and wishing for some free time that I can use to update you all on the happenings of my life.  Life = good.  Marathon Numero Uno for this girl is in less than FIVE WEEKS.  Holy cow, people.  HOLY. COW.

Victory has never tasted so sweet...

Blast that Achilles!

Remember how I mentioned that my achilles tendon was a bit sore during the first few miles of my half marathon? is now a LOT sore.  I ran 5 miles last Tuesday and by the end of it the tendon felt so tight that I was afraid it would snap right off.  I attempted to run my 16 miles on Saturday, but made it a whopping .35 miles before the pain was so bad I had to turn around.  SUPER LAME.  I've been icing it like CRAZY and it is starting to feel better, but still not well enough to run on.  So, I will be spending a lot of time on the bike this week.  I realllllly need to be able to do my long run this weekend, so send me good vibes!

Also, I'll be in Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend.  Anyone out there from there?  I'll be (hopefully) running 18 miles out there this weekend!

Timpanogos Half Marathon Race Recap!!

This post has been a loooooong time coming.  My apologies for not writing it sooner--I write my posts at work when I have spare time and this past week I've been training a new hire and there has been NO spare time.  Eesh!

First things first--this race was awesome and I had been looking forward to it for WEEKS.  Seriously.  I just knew it was going to be a good race for me.  Perhaps it was a good race for me because I had known it was going to be?  Who knows, but positive thinking does go quite a long way.  I was hoping to beat my previous half marathon time of 2:46 by about 20 minutes.  I knew I would be really happy with a 2:20 time.  A coworker of mine ran the Thanksgiving Point Half Marathon with me and got a personal best of just under 2:15.  He said that if I beat his time he would buy me a slurpee.  Not only did I want to beat that time, I also wanted that slurpee!!  And bragging rights!

The day started out quite early on Saturday morning when my alarm clock got me out of bed at 2:45 am in time for me to get dressed, eat some food, and be on the road by 3:30.  Never did I think I would live in a world where I would willingly pay $75 to wake up at that hour and run for 2+ hours and actually WANT to do it and even ENJOY it.  Times have certainly changed over the last year!  Anyway, I made it to the half marathon finish line at 4 am in time to meet up with some fellow Utah bloggers.  If you are ever in Utah and get a chance to meet these girls, do NOT hesitate!  They are so nice and genuine and wonderful.  It was definitely a highlight for me to get the chance to meet them!

It was great getting to hang out before the race with Candice, Julia, Alisha, and Rachelle (who I sadly don't have a photo with!).  I've read most of their blogs for a while now and it was kinda crazy to meet them in real life!  The blogging world is crazy and super fun!

The race was scheduled to start at 5:40 am, so we all headed to the bag drop around 5:35 to shed our extra layers.  It was a bit chilly outside, but nothing too uncomfortable.  We lined up according to our pace groups, and prepared for the run to begin.

5:40 quickly came and went.

And then 5:45...5:50...5:55...

Finally, at 6:00 am they counted us down and we were off!  The sun was fully up by this point and the beautiful canyon was completely visible.  The scenery was gorgeous!  I've driven this canyon during the fall when the colors are in peak and it cannot be beat!  It's phenomenal!  Because of all the extra rain and snow we've received this year, the trees were super green and the river was flowing strong.  I can't think of a better place to have a run!

The course has a very nice downhill pretty much the entire way.  Because of this, I was running faster than ever.  It felt amazing--my legs were strong, my lungs felt great, and I was so distracted by the scenery that I wasn't even noticing how quickly the miles were passing by.  Before I knew it, I was 4 miles in and it was time to have some GU.  I had some minor pain showing up in my achilles tendon on my right leg, but other than that I had no pain.  Even better, my knee pain was non-existent!  Goodbye, IT band problems!  You will not be missed!

Miles 4-6 blazed by.  I finally had gotten past the majority of runners that were going at a different pace from me and was now settled into a group of runners that were running at close the same speed.  At this point, the road gets even steeper and enters a series of corners.  The road is banked quite sharply so it was a bit uneven to run on.  I was running on the middle lines to try to keep my footing even, but apparently I'm not as graceful as I had hoped.

Okay, let's be honest.  I've NEVER been graceful.

What happened next will be a moment that I will remember for a long time.  And strangely enough, I'll remember it rather fondly.  You see, right around mile 6 I decided to become one with the pavement.  Not in a runner's high type of way, but rather a "oh-crap-the-ground-is-coming-towards-me-so-fast-this-is-gonna-hurt-bad" kind of way.  Yep.  I ate shiz.  I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but I do remember looking around at the mountains and trying to find Mount Timpanogos to see what she looked like in the morning sun. The next thing I knew, I was flying through the air headed toward the pavement at what felt like 50 mph.  When I hit the ground, I managed to hit my left hand, my left shoulder, my jaw and cheek, and my right knee.

Instantly, I was surrounded by concerned runners.  Several of them picked me up off the ground and were asking if I was okay.  I was touched by their concern!  I'm sure they lost some time checking to see if I needed helped, and I really appreciated their help.  I'm sure I looked a mess, but I had enough adrenaline in me to keep me running so I told them I was fine and started running again.

My hand hurt the worst.  I had hit on the palm of my hand and had lost a few layers of skin.  I had some gravel bits in the hand and it was stinging like crazy!  My knee also hurt pretty bad, but I was afraid to look at it because I knew that once I saw the damage it would hurt even worse.  The mind can play some pretty mean tricks!  I figured I had enough adrenaline in me to keep me out of pain until just before the finish line.  So, I just kept running.

And ya know what?  It still felt awesome to be running.  I don't think I lost any time at all due to my clumsiness.  I was so embarrassed by the fall that I think the entire encounter with the ground and runners probably took 5 seconds or less.  I move quick when I want to!

Miles 6-8 moved by and before I knew it I was out of the canyon.  I had been dreading leaving the canyon because I knew the course flattened out and the scenery would be not as stellar.  I also knew my paces wouldn't be as awesome because I was no longer running downhill!  It was, however, quite awesome to make it out of the canyon and see all the spectators cheering us on!  They were all very supportive and it was fun to hear their cheers.

Miles 8-10 I started to slow.  I'm not sure if it was because I was fueling differently that I normally do because I was running faster than I normally do, or if my fall was starting to get to me.  Either way, I suffered on the hills.  There was some walking, but I don't feel bad about it.  I was wise with my walking and made sure that I didn't sacrifice too much time.  We ran through a beautiful golf course and on a great trail that was shaded.  Luckily, the weather was PERFECT for the entire run so the shade was unnecessary.  It was overcast and not hot!  I couldn't have asked for better weather!  A highlight during this portion was passing a little girls dance team and seeing how excited they were to give all the runners high-fives.  It made me feel like a rock star!

Miles 10-12 were HARD.  I was tired.  I was sore.  I didn't have scenery to distract me, and I was starting to feel the pain in my body a bit more.  There was a minor hill at the top of mile 12 that I thought might kill me.  I remember being SO MAD because there was a photographer right at the top of the hill and I knew I couldn't walk and that I had smile for him.  And I didn't want to.  But I did.

And look how convincing my smile was!  I actually look like I'm having a good time!  Perhaps it was because I knew the hill was over and that I had nothing but downhill and flats left for me.  I was only 1.1 miles away from a great half marathon finish!

Miles 12-13 went by fast.  Knowing that I only had a few minutes left to run, I dug deep and picked up my pace.  I kept thinking of the slurpee that my coworker had bet me and knew that I could beat his time.  I don't even like slurpees all that much (don't get me wrong--they are super tasty, but I don't go out of my way to get them), but it was the idea that I could run well enough to be worthy of the slurpee.  A 2:15 half marathon time had seemed like a pipe dream at the beginning of the day, but now it was well within my grasp.

As I rounded the last corner and saw the finish line, I knew that I had run this race to the best of my abilities and could be proud of my performance.  I felt SO much better than I had at my last half, and knew that my training had paid off.  I crossed the finish line as the time clock said 2:07:45.  I knew I had earned my slurpee!  My official chip time?  2:05:57.  I did WAY better than I thought I was going to!  Never in my life did I think I would be only 6 minutes away from a sub 2 hour half marathon.  WOW!  I beat my previous half marathon time by 40 minutes!!

My mother-in-law met me at the end (she just missed me crossing the finish line!) and she helped me get some ice for my battle wounds.  I also met up with Candice, Julia, and Rachelle at the end.  We all had managed to achieve PRs on this race!  It was a good day to be running.  You can check out their race recaps here, here, and here. My chin was nice and scuffed up.  It now looks like big zits. So awesome.
Overall, I LOVED this race.  I would run it again in a heart beat (but this time I would pay more attention to where I was running!).  The course was gorgeous and FAST.  It was well organized (minus the minor hiccup of the late start), the volunteers were awesome, and the medal was super cool.  The tech tees were also super cute.  I give it an A.

As for the wounds themselves...the hand is nearly healed up (and super itchy!), the shoulder and elbow are both fine, and the chin is healing great.  The knee is the only thing that still has issues.  It doesn't hurt when I run, but I think I damaged a nerve in there somewhere.  There is a spot on my knee that if you touch the right spot it sends a shot of pain so strong that I will be in tears within .2 seconds.  And that's with a touch as light as a feather.  It's kind of weird.  But, like I said, it doesn't hurt when I run so I'm not too worried about it.  I'm sure it will get better with time.

That's the fastest I have ever ran!  And the longest!  Double win!  Can't wait to do this race again someday!

I know I totally owe you a race recap post...

...and it will be awesome because it will include details about me becoming one with the pavement during the run.    And by that I mean I tripped and ate some pavement.  In front of hundreds of people.  Oh yes.  My grace knows no bounds.

However, I am strapped for time so I have not had the opportunity to write you the post that you so much deserve.  So, instead you get some photos from my run today.  I know this is what you really wanted anyway.


Well, that's unfortunate because it's all I can give to you at the moment!  So enjoy?

Summer is on its way out.  I know this because I had to bust out my headlamp and reflective vest this morning.  Boo!

Also, this is the view outside of my office.  I love the mountains in the valley.  I would miss them if I ever moved!
